Pinguicula gigantea

As the name suggests, Pinguicula gigantea is a giant among Mexican butterworts! It has thick leathery leaves that can approach the size of your hand. In the right conditions, these plants have been known to grow as large as a dinner plate.

Despite their large size, they can easily grow in very small pots. Butterwort roots are very short, sometimes no more than 1/2 inch (1.25 cm), so they don't need a lot of soil volume to grow. They just need space for their leaves!

This specimen is growing in a pumice rock.

A couple of yers ago, we drilled a hole in the rock. Belore carefully placing a young plant in the hole, we wrapped the roots with long-fiber sphagnum moss.

After a couple of years, the plants is living up to its name.

We sell these butterworts in 3-inch pots. This plant was one that we held back to replenish our stock of mother plants for future propagation.

A red leaf Cape sundew took up residence in the pot. Unfortunately, the soil condition isn't optimal for sundews.

We are sold out of P. gigantea. We should have more by summer, but we have other types of butterworts in stock. Click here to check them out.
