Garden Plants - Desert, Partial Sunlight
Living in a hot, dry climate, you will need to be careful of the plants you select, but overall many forms of cold-hardy carnivorous plants will grow well for you. These include:
The only plants to avoid are Drosera rotundifolia and any of the hardy butterworts. These plants prefer mild conditions.
Because of their special soil requirements, grow your plants in containers. Peat moss and perlite is all you'll need. They also requirel low-mineral water. Excess minerals will damage their roots. To control soil temperature, use large pots and top water daily.
As for sunlight, these plants prefer lots of sunlight. They will grow OK with 4-6 hours of unobstructed sunlight, but they will likely lose their vibrant colors. The more sun, the better growth you'll see.
Because cold-hardy carnivorous plants are native to the United States, they will go dormant in winter, so keep them outdoors, even in chilly, frosty weather. When grown in containers, these plants are hardy down to 20°F unprotected. Mulch or other forms of winter protection is necessary in zones 6 and colder.
