Feist Dog Sarracenia are plants whose parentage we can't confirm. Often random seedlings will pop up in our nursery and the plants would have interesting characteristics. We would then grow them out, either to maturity or close to maturity, to see if we want to keep them as part of our regular inventory. However, not all plants can make the cut. Sometimes they are too similar to what we already have, or they just didn't have the quality we were looking for. But, make no mistake. While they are no longer in the running for cultivar status at our nursery, they are still stunning plants in their own right and deserve a loving home. (The term Feist Dog originates from the rural regions of the southern United States and refers to small, mixed-breed hunting dogs. And just like mixed breed dogs, each Feist Dog pitcher plant has a personality unique to its own. While the photos are representative of the current batch for sale, appearance will vary. All selection is done randomly.)

Feist Dog Hybrid - Leucophylla Features

Posted by James Baker on October 13, 2021

My plant arrived very quickly and was well packaged. I don't think it could have been in any better shape if I'd picked it up in person. The specimen itself was very robust with a thick crown and a couple of new growth points already. It had three large (14" tall) pitchers open, with one developing pitcher on the way up. The pitchers on my Feist Dog are predominantly green with white speckling around the mouth and hood, and some burgundy veining and splotches inside the hood. The pitcher and mouth shape look very much like Sarracenia leucophylla, but the hood takes on a more upward attitude, and is less wavy. I moved my plant into a much larger pot right away so it would be less vulnerable to cat attacks and have a larger water reservoir. The pitcher that was developing during shipping became stunted for some reason, and never finished developing. That didn't prevent my plant from producing three more gorgeous new pitchers in the month since I re-potted it. Two of them have opened nicely at the time of this review, with more on the way. The newest pitchers lack the burgundy coloration that is present on the original pitchers, but I admittedly have the plant receiving only 4-5 hours of direct sun. Overall, I was very happy to round out my monthly giveaway prize selection with this vigorous Sarracenia leucophylla stand-in.

    Excellent bug catchers

Posted by James Burket on September 14, 2020

My garden is cleaner since I've included pitcher plants in my bug control program. The pitcher plants provide a organic, pesticide-free control. I've had pitchers in the garden for the past five years, but after seeing the pitcher tubes get filled to the brim, I decided to add more pitchers to keep up with the supply of bugs available. The shipping method designed by Sarracenia Northwest ensures that the tall, delicate pitcher plants arrive in excellent condition.
