This flytrap features red leaves and traps. Young plants are bright red throughout. As the plant matures, it turns maroon with a green margin along the edge of the traps. Despite its attractive red leaves, this particular variety is temperamental. It dislikes root disturbance, and it dislikes excessive heat. (Other varieties of flytraps are much more resilient.) In winter, it will also drop all of its leaves, leaving nothing to show. The Red Dragon Flytrap is best for growers who have experience growing the more typical variety.

Type of Plant: Outdoor perennial for container growing.
Height: Up to 4 inches at maturity.
Sunlight: Full sun during the growing season. (The Red Dragon Flytrap likes full sun but dislikes excessive heat. So it's most suitable to regions with sunny yet moderate summers.)
Water: Low-mineral water (50 ppm or less).
Soil: Equal parts peat moss and perlite only.
Winter: Dormant. Minimal protection in USDA zones 7-9. Mulch in colder regions.

The plant was dormant but now many of the traps have grown and look healthy.

    Great little plant!

Packaged carefully with clear instructions. Of all the online carnivorous plant stores, Sarracenia Northwest packaged this little guy the most safely. The red dragon is growing well in the new home. The new leaves grew green. Although basic care instructions are very helpful, it would have been nice to know that leaves might turn green (not red) if not enough light. Hopefully, I got the environment fixed now.

I bought two of these flytraps and am very pleased with my purchase. They have continued to flourish and are not hard to care for at all. I would not hesitate to buy more from Sarracenia.

    Great fly traps!

Posted by DAVID DAWSON on April 19, 2020

I purchase a couple of red dragon fly traps and they are doing terrific! I followed the instructions that were written in the book and from what I can see these fly traps are doing very well. The condition that they arrived in was exemplary and I am very satisfied with the business from this nursery. I also ordered Spanish lavender from another nursery and it arrived in far worse condition! I could clearly see that this nursery loved these fly traps and that nursery packed up and shipped really poor quality lavender that died already. I give us a nursery five stars!

A healthy little plant arrived. I planted it with my other traps and it seems happy. It is losing some of its red, turning to green.
