Dionaea muscipula Red Dragon Flytrap
See below for a full description.
This flytrap has red leaves and traps. Young plants are bright red all over. As it matures, it turns maroon with a green edge along the traps. Despite its attractive red leaves, it dislikes excessive heat. It also dislikes root disturbance, so we suggest repotting it only in late winter before the growing season starts. In fall, it slows down and gets ready for winter dormancy by dropping nearly all of its traps. While dormant, this plant can survive an overnight frost down to 20°F. Growth picks up again in spring.
The Red Dragon Flytrap is best suited for growers who have experience with the more common variety.

Nice little plant that died back
I can't really complain about the condition of the "Red Dragon" Venus flytrap I received. It was a small plant that had a number of apparently healthy leaves. I tried to baby the plant since it looked so delicate. Since the weather outside was rather unsettled, I placed the pot in a tray with a little water under fluorescent lights and brought the plant outside in the sun only occasionally. Within a couple of weeks, the older leaves had all died. A blooming stalk pushed up in the center of the plant but grew only an inch or so and then stopped growing. The younger leaves then all died. When I subsequently lifted the flytrap (essentially just a "bulb") to transplant it into a bigger pot with other flytraps, I noticed that it did not appear to have much of a root system at all. The pot of flytraps is now outside. Other plants in the pot are growing and blooming, but I'm not yet sure what has become of my Red Dragon. RESPONSE FROM SARRACENIA NORTHWEST: Sorry to hear about your plant. Despite it looking delicate, this plant is very resilient when given the chance. The initial care that you gave the plant is NOT part of our recommended care instructions. We recommend growing the plant outdoors in full sun. We grow all flytraps, including Red Dragon, strictly outdoors at our nursery in Oregon. I suspect that the plant did not receive adequate lighting. It needs strong sunlight to survive and requires more sunlight than other types of flytraps. Without it, the plant will slowly wither away. Lack of proper sunlight is the main cause of death for flytraps and other carnivorous plants. Always remember that what you think is bright enough is irrelevant. The plant is always the final judge. As you have noted, the plant had a number of healthy leaves upon arrival. Unfortunately, because the proper care instructions were not followed, we are not able to follow-up with the 30-day guarantee. It only applies when plants are cared for according to the instructions provided with the plant. You can also contact us when you notice a problem with your plant or have any questions regarding care instructions. We will always work with you to ensure your success.

The plant arrived in perfect condition and even had a flowering stalk that sprouted up a couple days after arriving. The flytrap is growing rapidly and caught a spider the other day.

Looked a little worse for wear from the shipping despite careful packing. It's outside now and perking up some. I expect it will be fine given a little more time.
