This flytrap features red leaves and traps. Young plants are bright red throughout. As the plant matures, it turns maroon with a green margin along the edge of the traps. Despite its attractive red leaves, this particular variety is temperamental. It dislikes root disturbance, and it dislikes excessive heat. (Other varieties of flytraps are much more resilient.) In winter, it will also drop all of its leaves, leaving nothing to show. The Red Dragon Flytrap is best for growers who have experience growing the more typical variety.

Type of Plant: Outdoor perennial for container growing.
Height: Up to 4 inches at maturity.
Sunlight: Full sun during the growing season. (The Red Dragon Flytrap likes full sun but dislikes excessive heat. So it's most suitable to regions with sunny yet moderate summers.)
Water: Low-mineral water (50 ppm or less).
Soil: Equal parts peat moss and perlite only.
Winter: Dormant. Minimal protection in USDA zones 7-9. Mulch in colder regions.

    Love my Red Dragon

It's growing like a weed, and already has a flower stalk. I only had it for a few weeks.

    it's okay

I bought this plant last year along with king henry and judith hindle. It was very small and fragile looking. It grew new traps as old ones died off, so it didn't get any bigger. At the end of the season I re-potted it into 5x5x7 white square pot and waited out the winter. This year it's doing a lot better. It tried to flower, but I cut off the stalk since I want it to grow bigger instead of spending all of its energy flowering. Early traps are maroon with green around the edges, which I love. Although since I live in GA, it gets super hot and so all of the traps turn completely dark red after a couple of weeks. If you like the color and don't mind the slow growth, then it's a great plant. For me, I refer ones with vigor as I like watching them grow.

This plant has been a ton of fun to watch, had exploded with growth and producing HUGE traps that are not much smaller than my B52. Great dark red with some green on older traps

Nice little plant that died back

Posted by Keith C. on June 7, 2016

I can't really complain about the condition of the "Red Dragon" Venus flytrap I received. It was a small plant that had a number of apparently healthy leaves. I tried to baby the plant since it looked so delicate. Since the weather outside was rather unsettled, I placed the pot in a tray with a little water under fluorescent lights and brought the plant outside in the sun only occasionally. Within a couple of weeks, the older leaves had all died. A blooming stalk pushed up in the center of the plant but grew only an inch or so and then stopped growing. The younger leaves then all died. When I subsequently lifted the flytrap (essentially just a "bulb") to transplant it into a bigger pot with other flytraps, I noticed that it did not appear to have much of a root system at all. The pot of flytraps is now outside. Other plants in the pot are growing and blooming, but I'm not yet sure what has become of my Red Dragon. RESPONSE FROM SARRACENIA NORTHWEST: Sorry to hear about your plant. Despite it looking delicate, this plant is very resilient when given the chance. The initial care that you gave the plant is NOT part of our recommended care instructions. We recommend growing the plant outdoors in full sun. We grow all flytraps, including Red Dragon, strictly outdoors at our nursery in Oregon. I suspect that the plant did not receive adequate lighting. It needs strong sunlight to survive and requires more sunlight than other types of flytraps. Without it, the plant will slowly wither away. Lack of proper sunlight is the main cause of death for flytraps and other carnivorous plants. Always remember that what you think is bright enough is irrelevant. The plant is always the final judge. As you have noted, the plant had a number of healthy leaves upon arrival. Unfortunately, because the proper care instructions were not followed, we are not able to follow-up with the 30-day guarantee. It only applies when plants are cared for according to the instructions provided with the plant. You can also contact us when you notice a problem with your plant or have any questions regarding care instructions. We will always work with you to ensure your success.
