Brocchinia reducta

(58 reviews)
Brocchinia reducta is a rare carnivorous bromeliad native to Venezuela. The plant forms a tight pitcher-like structure called a "tank" that collects rainwater. The leaves are coated with a silver-gray powder that makes the leaf surface very slippery. As insects walk across the leaves, they fall into the reservoir of water below and drown. The plant then produces enzymes to absorb nutrients from the dead insect. Sunlight is the most important part of this plant's care. When grown in full sun, the plant will produce tall, upright leaves with a yellow hue. In lower light conditions, the leaves are green and floppy. Grow this plant outdoors during summer to see its full potential. In fall, before frost occurs, grow the plant indoors in the brightest window possible.

I wish I could post a photo to this update. My B. reducta is so happy! It has produced four pups in under a year. It is growing very well. I am so happy about this purchase.

    B. reducta purchase

Posted by Andrew Ryan Ramirez on December 26, 2021

The Brocchinia reducta arrived to my home and was packaged as one would expect a delicate plant to be packaged. I cannot comment on the plant currently because I am waiting for it to grow larger. I have it in a great environment and take care of it as it should be, but growth is slow. I hope it lives and takes to its new home soon!

I ordered a brocchinia reducta around Christmas and the plant had cold damage due to shipping delays. They sent me a replacement plant after New Years at no cost. New plant looks great.
