Sarracenia rosea, a denizen of the hot wetlands of the Florida panhandle, appreciates hot summers and long growing seasons. In spring when pitchers first emerge, leaves are a striking translucent cream color with a hint of pink. By early fall, the plant transforms into a rosette of large, truly voluptuous pitchers, crimson colored and just slightly velvety. In winter, S. rosea will go dormant and will drop its leaves during significant frost. Look for light pink flowers in mid to late spring. Although we categorize this plant as an outdoor perennial. this is one of the few North American pitcher plants which we have found to be growable year-round indoors on a windowsill, without a dormancy. We've successfully been growing this species in a south-facing kitchen window for several years. The plant is almost 18 inches across! So, if you have a window with lots of direct sunlight and you live in a region with lots of snow, you can try growing this plant indoors instead.

In spring when pitchers first emerge, leaves are a striking translucent cream color with a hint of pink. The titular flowers, unique among North American pitchers, are pinkish-rose.

This is one of the few North American pitcher plants which we have found to be growable year-round indoors on a windowsill, without a dormancy. A plant that Jeff has been growing on his South-facing kitchen window is almost 18 inches across. This unorthodox approach to growing a Sarracenia may be a method you wish to try out yourself on this species!

Unlike other North American pitcher plants, the purple pitcher and most of its varieties are ground-hugging rain-catchers. They can attain impressive size over time, growing broader and denser as other species grow taller and wider, and attaining deeper coloration as others grow brighter.

In winter, S. rosea will go dormant and will drop its leaves during significant frost. Look for flowers in mid to late spring.

To differentiate this plant from its close relative Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa, Sarracenia rosea has a fatter lip and fewer undulations to the lid, and bears pink flowers. Sarracenia rosea is sometimes also referred to as Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii, or "Burke's Pitcher Plant".

    Beautiful

Plant arrived on time. Packaged perfectly. It was bigger than expected for a small. Deep red coloration and a pamphlet to read about its requirements. Out of all my plants, even though small, it stands out! I love my sarracenia rosea. Thank you for this wonderful plant!

    Wonderful Plant, Well Packed

Posted by Keith Coleman on September 26, 2015

I ordered one S. rosea and one S. x "Yellow Jacket." Both plants arrived in great condition. I have never had anyone so carefully pack and ship carnivorous plants to me; I was surprised. The S. rosea is a beautiful plant. It is bigger than I expected for a small plant, and it is a wonderful deep velvety red (just as it was described). I am very happy with my order.
