FAQ about Established Sarracenia Rhizomes

Why purchase established rhizomes?
Established rhizomes have larger root systems when compared to recent divisions. Having larger root systems mean they will grow much more vigorously during the upcoming growing season. Established rhizomes are either:

• Grown from seed and left intact OR
• Mature divisions that were divided approximately 2 or more years ago.

You also save money by purchasing them bare root during their dormancy. For reference, a medium plant sold in a 4-inch pot during the growing season retail for $34.95, depending on the variety. You can get a medium established rhizome for less than half that! You also save on shipping since plants are shipped without soil and pots.

Bare root rhizomes are availbable December-February only.

How many rhizomes are in each 2-ounce pack?
We guarantee only the weight of each 2-ounce pack. Rhizomes will vary in size, depending on variety and the way they break off from the mother plant. Some packs have only two rhizomes because they're larger and weigh more. Others might have as many as 4 because they're smaller. However, the weight of each pack is the same - 2 ounces.

Which varieties are available?
These plants are generally overstocked or discontinued varieites and are available as individual rhizomes (identified) or in 2-ounce packs (random selections, unindentified).

Check back periodically as inventory will change throughout winter.

How do you gauge rhizome sizes?
Sizes are classified by their root system and the minimum pot size they require.

Small: Minimum 3-inch pot.
Medium: Minimum 4-inch pot.
Large: Minimum 5-inch pot.
Extra Large: Minimum 6-inch pot.

NOTE: Some plants, such as Sarracenia purpurea, have naturally small rhizomes, but their root system may require a 4-inch pot or larger. In this case, we would classify the rhizome as medium or large, not small.

Are instructions included?

Yes, you will receive instructions on how to pot and care for your rhizomes. You can also watch our videos below.

What will I need when my rhizomes arrive?

• Carnivorous plant soil mix (equali parts peat moss and perlite)
• Plastic pots of the appropriate size.

Click here to purchase soil and pots.

How large will the pitchers grow? And will my plants bloom?
Pitchers are expected to be close to their typical adult height, according to their size and variety. Some plants naturally produce very tall pitchers, while other plants naturally produce short pitchers.

Larger rhizomes are also more likely to flower. However, we cannot guarantee that the rhizome you receive will flower for you during the upcoming growing season. Some plants naturally produce an abundance of flowers, while others produce scant numbers.

The growing season is typically April through September, depending on your region.

I'm not ready to pot them up. Can I wait?
For best results, pot them immediately upon arrival. If you need to delay potting, spray your rhizomes with a sulur-based fungicide as directed by the manufacturer. Place the rhizomes back into the plastic bag and store them in your refrigerator. They can be kept there for 6-8 weeks, but you will need to check on them periodically for mold and fungus. Spray with additional sulfur-based fungicide as needed.

Can you hold rhizomes for me to ship later?
Because bare root rhizomes are perishable, we ship them within 1 week of your order.

Do you guarantee your rhizomes will grow for me?
We guarantee plants for 30 days as long as you follow the instructions provided with your plants. A healthy rhizome will be firm with supple roots and white inner flesh. Beyond the 30-day period, you assume all responsibility for the health of your rhizomes. If you're an experienced grower and willing to assume the majority of the risk, bare root rhizomes can be a great bargain.

While we do not guarantee how you may interpret or implement our instructions, we are available to answer your questions. Please visit the Ask The Growers page or the 30-Day Guarantee page for more information.

NOTE: If you are new to growing Sarracenia, consider purchasing an established potted plant instead. You will have better success learning about their seasonal growth habits and care when starting off with established potted plants rather than bare root rhizomes.

Bare Root Sarracenia Rhizomes - Established

Posted by Steven Findak on January 24, 2024

As always was very pleased with my order. The Rhizomes were well-packaged and quite impressive. I potted them up and with any luck I will not kill them. At this point, Sarracenia Northwest is the only company that I will buy carnivorous plants from. I have not been impressed with the plants that I have received from other carnivorous plant companies.

    Ordered 12 bare root rhizomes

Posted by Ori Tanner on December 18, 2023

I ordered 10 small rhizomes and 1 med and 1 large. The smalls were a little smaller than I expected, but compared to some plants I got last year they were 2x bigger crowns . The med and large were the size I was looking for each had 3 to 4 crowns. I will probably get some more lol but this time I will only get med or large But over all really happy with the order. Great mix of random plants.

SUPERB plant, QUICK delivery, FANTASTIC packaging, TOTALLY SATISFIED with this plant. Three days after potting, flower stalk started to grow. Now has three separate groups of pitchers forming. I'm completely happy with this order. Thanks SNW.
