FAQ about Bare Root Sarracenia Rhizomes

Why purchase recent divisions in bulk?
You save money. A lot of money.

These rhizomes are recent divisions of very large mother plants in our collection. When dividing plants, we trim off excess rhizomes and roots, so they will need time to recover. They will look their best during their second or third growing season after division. If you're willing to care for recently divided rhizomes during their recovery phase, you can save a lot of money!

Bare root rhizomes are availbable December-February only.

Which varieties are included?

Bulk plants are randomly selected from an undisclosed batch of overstocked plants, discontinued plants, and plants that lost their labels. When rhizomes are divided and trimmed, they are placed into a large bin with other rhizomes. All selections are done randomly. Consider it like a grab bag. The fun is seeing what pops up!

How are sizes gauged?
With bulk plants, we don't bother sorting plants by size. Recent divisions are trimmed down to the growing point. Essentially, they have smaller rhizomes and fewer roots than an established plant. Expect your rhizomes to fit appropriately in 2-inch, 3-inch, and 4-inch pots. Selection is done randomly.

How many rhizomes are in each pack?
We guarantee only the weight of each 2-ounce pack. Rhizomes will vary in size, depending on variety and the way they break off from the mother plant. Some packs have only two rhizomes because they're larger and weigh more. Others might have as many as 8 because they're much smaller and have fewer roots. However, the weight of each pack is the same - 2 ounces.

Packs are selected randomly when orders are fulfilled. Please view photos above for examples of variability of these 2-ounce packs. (Banana is for scale and not included.)

What will I need when my Sarracenia arrive?

• Carnivorous plant soil mix (equal parts peat moss and perlite)
• Plastic pots of the appropriate size

Are instructions included?
Yes, you will receive instructions on how to pot and care for your rhizomes. You can also watch our YouTube video.

How large will the pitchers grow?
The natural growing season for Sarracenia is April - September. When actively growing, the size of the pitcher will depend on the variety and initial size of the division.

Unlabeled packs of rhizomes are selected from a random mix of Sarracernias. Some are tall and slender.  Others are short and stout.

With recently divided rhizomes, you can expect to see their full potential size in 2-3 growing seasons.

Can you make sure I don't receive any duplicates?
Rhizomes are prepackaged and randomly selected from a large bin of freshly divided rhizomes. Duplication is unavoidable and will likely occur.

I'm not ready to pot them up. Can I wait?
For best results, pot them immediately upon arrival. If you need to delay potting, spray your rhizomes with a sulur-based fungicide as directed by the manufacturer. Place the rhizomes back into the plastic bag and store them in your refrigerator where they can be kept there for 6-8 weeks. Check on them periodically for mold and fungus. Spray with additional sulfur-based fungicide as needed.

Can you hold rhizomes for me to ship later?
Because bare root rhizomes are perishable, we need to ship them within 1 week of your order.

Do you guarantee that your rhizomes will grow for me?
We guarantee plants for 30 days as long as you follow the instructions provided with your plants. A healthy rhizome will be firm with supple roots and white inner flesh. Beyond the 30-day period, you assume all responsibility for the rhizomes' health and growth. If you're an experienced grower and willing to assume the majority of the risk, bare root rhizomes can be a great bargain.

While we do not guarantee how you may interpret or implement our instructions, we are available to answer your questions. Please visit the Ask The Growers page or the 30-Day Guarantee page for more information.

NOTE: If you are new to growing Sarracenia, consider purchasing an established potted plant instead. You will have better success learning about their seasonal growth habits and care when starting off with established potted plants rather than bare root rhizomes.

    First Time Buyer

Posted by Elizabeth Foster on March 17, 2017

I was suggested to this company from a coworker, she informed me of a fantastic deal SNW was having on Bare Root Sarracenias. Upon visiting the site, I was pleasantly surprised with how helpful the descriptions of products were. Ordering was also a breeze. SNW kept me updated as winter storms lead to delivery delays. The company provided tracking number and genuinely made me feel they appreciated my business. Products: I ordered 2 10 packs of Bare Root Sarracenias. I received 28-30. I think I received a few extra because 2-3 of my rhizomes were rather small. However after successful transplanting and a few weeks of warm spring weather, all Sarracenias are showing new growth. Altogether, I highly recommend SNW for both their customer service and fantastic products.

I am happy with how the plants arrived.

Posted by Edith McGuire on March 8, 2017

I was ready to pot my bare root plants immediately upon arrival, but since our weather has been horrible and colder than normal, I haven't removed the straw I covered them with when I placed them in the water tubs. I'm optimistic that they will grow, but I don't have the greenest of thumbs.

    Such a deal!

Posted by Janet on March 8, 2017

The rhizomes arrived in good condition. I was able to group them into 3 sizes: small medium and larger. I received 13 rhizomes. 3 more than advertised. I live in North Central Florida so things have been warming up here and the early signs of spring are evident. All of my rhizomes are thriving. Some are sending up flower stalks.

I was very surprised how healthy these roots were when they arrived. It was just like I had dug them from my yard. Leaves are starting to grow. Just in time to go outside.
