The king sundew, Drosera regia, has a very uncanny ability to wrap its leaves around captured insects. In some instances, a leaf will wrap around an insect so perfectly it looks like it wrapped itself into a knot! Some say that the king sundew gets its name from its spear-like leaves that form a crown of sorts. Others say that its name comes its size.

This plant can be a bit of an enigma for some growers. We've found that it's not very tolerant of constant high temperatures. It definitely likes cool nights, like in its native habit in the coastal mountains of South Africa. It grows best when night temperatures drop below 70°F.
Plants You Receive
Your plant will be shipped potted in a 4-inch pot. Plants will have leaves about 3-inch tall and will reach flowering maturity within two growing seasons. All plants were propagated on-site from proven mother plants in our collection. Photo is representative of plants for sale.

Plant was much smaller than pictured and came with 3 dead leaves and only 3 green leaves. I hope it does not die. and the living leaves are getting yellow and not dewy. *** RESPONSE BY SARRACENIA NORTHWEST *** I hope it doesn't die either! Our plants come with a 30-day guarantee. Superb

Plant arrived in excellent condition and very healthy. Packaged with extreme care (packaging was like a safe mini greenhouse!) has been growing great and catching small gnats. Awesome leaf movement on this plant it is extreme, wrapping up around larger prey like spiders in coils. I can't wait to watch this plant grow larger.

    Baby Drosera

Posted by Kevin on February 12, 2018

I placed the plant in a very sunny garden window and over four weeks all of the arms turned black and died. Not sure why, I grow Nepenthes in the same window and have years of Sarracenia and fly trap experience. I hope it comes back to life as we go into spring and summer. ***RESPONSE BY SARRACENIA NORTHWEST*** Sorry that your plant hadn't grown well for you. Two things. First, contact us through Ask The Experts. We are available to assist growers should they see abnormal growth in their plants. Supply all the requested information so that we can help you diagnose the issue and recommend an appropriate course of action. Regal for sure

Posted by Unknown on January 20, 2018

I finally felt ready to try this plant. It came very vigorous with a "baby" at the base. No other sundew has the knotting action in the leaves; it is hungry and happy!

    Nice plant

Posted by Tim on August 26, 2017

Packaged great for shipping. Arrived in good health and is growing well in our kitchen window. Has already caught a few fruit flies that manage to make their way into the house. After about a month, it has already produced several new leaves.

    Great plant

Posted by Dominic Sacchetti on January 11, 2015

It has been growing rapidly and has formed many new leaves. Even though it is small it has caught many large flies. I also got a bonus second plant in the pot too. Thanks!
