This variety of flytrap produces upright yellow traps. The mouths of the traps have a splash of reddish orange. It grows very vigorously and sends up multiple traps at once. It also produces larger than normal traps when it matures, up to 1 1/2 inches. Because of the long petioles, the leaves flop over due to the weight of the large traps. This is probably why it was called King Henry!

Type of Plant: Outdoor perennial for container growing.
Height: Up to 5 inches at maturity.
Sunlight: Full sun during the growing season.
Water: Low-mineral water (50 ppm or less).
Soil: Equal parts peat moss and perlite only.
Winter: Dormant. Minimal protection in USDA zones 7-9. Mulch in colder regions.

    Careful packaging

My plants arrived carefully packaged and still moist and healthy. They are alive but currently dormant, enjoying some cold rainwater on the back deck. I look forward to seeing how they grow this spring.

    Plant Review

Posted by Andrew North on December 28, 2023

I am currently only giving this item a 3 star rating. The reason I am not going higher or lower is that the plant was DOA dormant on arrival. Everyone giving negative reviews need to chill. The plants start going Dormant in August to November. That is why they are on sale. I will come back in the spring and re-write my review based on how it does coming out of Dormancy. If you do not understand this you should not be growing CP's as MANY of them go dormant and look almost dead.

the fly trap arrived looking good but then started turning black

Posted by patti on August 10, 2023

I have tried everything to save this plant, everything I've ever gotten from you guys is usually great and grows really good, and I have no problems. right now its one tiny little black dead plant. I acclimated it for the horrible hot weather we were having and it still died. I have another fly trap from another company that turned black and died also. I have one flytrap from another company that is doing good. I'm very sad and figure I won't get fly traps again. *** RESPONSE BY SARRACENIA NORTHWEST *** I'm sorry to hear about the plant! I reviewed our records and saw that you submitted a question to Ask The Growers yesterday. Please allow up to 7 days for Jeff to get back to you. It's also best to contact us immediately when you notice something going on, especially during the initial 30 days. We can't do much to salvage the situation after a plant dies, but we can do our best to give you helpful pointers and diagnose the situation while the plant is still alive. These plants have survived many hot spells (100°+) at our nursery, so we just have to figure out what you can do for your specific microclimate. Please look for Jeff's response within the coming week.

The plant arrived in excellent condition (as usual). After about 2 weeks traps began to die before they were fully developed and I was beginning to worry that I would loose the plant. But then it started to produce new traps and it almost back to where it was when it arrived.

    Don’t leave in sitting water

Posted by Kevin on April 28, 2023

I followed the instructions given on the care sheet that was mailed to me. Put the plant in full sun outdoors after acclimating it in partial shade, kept it sitting in distilled water. The leaves turned black and died back but I thought it was just because I bought the plant while in dormancy in beginning of March. It’s late April now, the days are long, but the plant is barely pushing out a couple baby leaves. I was wondering why it was taking so long to wake up when my sarracenia are already in full bloom, and when I took a look at the rhizome it had root rot. Apparently you shouldn’t keep VFT in sitting water, and should let it dry somewhat inbetween watering . Plant still has a couple rhizomes that survived so 4/5 stars plant is still alive but don’t make the same mistake I did

King Henry Flytrap's flight arrived here in the snowy Salt Lake valley in the best conditions. He received a drink of Salt Lake's greatest snow on earth snow water and then took its place in the garage with the other wintering plants, and is doing very well

    Beautifull

I received my king henery about a month ago. The plant I received while being dormant was clearly in excellent health. I was pleased to see that it had been packaged beautifully and that alot of love went into the early part of its life. It has woken up since then and is growing nicely. I have had a ton of new traps appear with no sign of slowing down. Love it and will be shopping thru thease guys again in the future.
