Because of their size, mature Sarracenia plants are primarily available for in-person purchases. However, when they're dormant, they can be shipped bare root without any impact on their growth. Mature rhizomes are at least a year old from division and will be shipped bare root - no pots, no soil. Bare root rhizomes are best for the experienced grower who understands the seasonal growth habits of Sarracenia. If you are new to growing Sarracenia, you will have better success starting with an established potted plant. Please read below for details.

FAQ about Mature Sarracenia Rhizomes

What is a mature rhizome?
Mature rhizomes are plants that have remained undivided for at least 1 year.  The larger the specimen, the older the rhizome is from division.  (Extra large rhizomes are several years old.)  Mature rhizomes are much more vigorous and grow larger pitchers than their recently divided counterparts.

You also have the option of dividing these large rhizomes into smaller plants.  Once divided, however, they will be considered as recent divisions and should be cared for as such.

All rhizomes are currently dormant. During their dormant state, we cut off all leaves from the previous season and wash off the old soil. We will also spray them with a natural fungicide to prevent mold growth during shipping.

What is the difference in sizes?

Like dog breeds, size is extremely relative amongst varieties and very subjective.  Small/Medium rhizomes are appropriate for 4-inch pots.  Large rhizomes often have extesive roots and are most appropriate in 5-inch or 6-inch pots.  Extra large plants will require 8-inch pots or larger.

Are instructions included?
Yes, you will receive instructions on how to pot and care for your rhizomes.  You can also watch our YouTube video.

What will I need when my rhizomes arrive?
You will need the following supplies:

  • Regular carnivorous plant soil.
  • Plastic pots of the appropriate size.

How large will the pitchers grow? And will my plants bloom?
During the growing season (April - September), pitchers are expected to be close to their typical adult height, according to their variety. Some plants naturally produce very tall pitchers, while other plants naturally produce short pitchers.

Older plants are also more likely to flower. However, we cannot guarantee that the rhizome you receive will flower for you this season.  Some plants naturally produce an abundance of flowers, while others produce scant numbers.

I'm not ready to pot them up. Can I wait?
For best results, pot them immediately upon arrival. Rhizomes will also be treated with a natural fungicide before shipment, so you have the option to store them in your refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. However, you will need to check them periodically and treat for fungus accordingly with a sulfur spray during storage.

Can you hold rhizomes for me to ship later?
Because of the perishable nature of bare root rhizomes, we ship them within 1 week of your order.

Do you guarantee your rhizomes will grow for me?
We guarantee plants for 30 days as long as you follow the instructions provided with your plants. A healthy rhizome will be firm with supple roots and white inner flesh.  Beyond the 30-day period, you assume all responsibility for the health of your plants.  If you're an experienced grower and willing to assume the majority of the risk, bare root rhizomes can be a great bargain.

While we do not guarantee how you may interpret or implement our instructions, we are available to answer your questions. Please visit the Ask The Growers page or the 30-Day Guarantee page for more information.

If you are new to growing Sarracenia, please consider purchasing an established potted plant instead.  You will have better success learning about the seasonal growth habits and care of these plants with potted plants than with a bare root rhizomes.
