The common name for this subspecies is Wherry sweet pitcher. It is among the larger of the sweet pitcher complex. A thin layer of fuzz on the upper portions of the red-orange foliage is the tell-tale characteristic of this species, along with a rounded lid and a striking yellow-green lip. The typical form of this subspecies has red flowers, but this one has orange-yellow flowers that sometimes appear pink if the weather is cool enough.

Like its relatives subspecies jonesii and ssp. rubra, leaves of ssp. wherryi are shorter than most other Sarracenia, growing very compactly on narrow rhizomes which branch readily. An ideal display for ssp. wherryi is en masse, where a plant is left to grow into a small forest of uniform traps, like a sort of carnivorous bonsai.

The Wherry sweet pitcher is a late season plant, which means it produces the finale of its most robust traps in the heat of late summer. While most other forms of sweet pitcher retain their leaves in winter, this one will drop them completely.

Plants You Receive
Plants are shipped in 4-inch pots with proper growing media. Each plant is a division from select mother plants in our collection. Plants may need an additional growing season for pitchers to reach full size.

All cold hardy plants are grown outdoors at our nursery in Oregon and experience the changes of the seasons. Care instructions are provided.
